In Mexico, "unique" pre-Hispanic remains have been discovered

This is a platform whose sides are decorated with circular stones, unlike the remains unearthed so far in this region of Mexico. A monolith depicting a figure with possible Mayan features was also discovered, according to the National Institute of Archaeology and History (INAH).

The Mexican leader assured that her government would dedicate resources to the research and restoration of these remains.

"This is a unique discovery, there is no precedent," Lino Espinoza Garcia, an archaeologist with INAH and one of the coordinators of the Campo Viejo site in Coatepec, Veracruz state, told reporters.

The remains, dating from the Early Classic period (between 200 and 600 AD), include a structure built of slabs and limestone, decorated with lines or square-like figures, in addition to circular stones. Such features are not unique to the region and had never been recorded before, the institute stated in a press release.

"It's a very particular structure," said Alberto Vazquez, the other archaeologist in charge of the site.

The monolith is a stele 1,88 meters high by 1,47 meters wide, with a thickness between 22 and 25 centimeters, on which two figures appear.
