Detailed study of the window market in France in 2023

For this new edition of the P&P study, the firm spoke with 197 managers of major industrial companies in the sector and 1.401 managers of installation companies, between March and July 2024, in order to obtain quantitative and qualitative data.

Global market

In 2023, 10.321.000 windows were sold, the result of a continuous decrease of 4,5% in 2022 (vs 2021) then 4,0% in 2023 (vs 2022), i.e. a total of -8,2% over two years between 2021 and 2023.

At the same time, French manufacturing is made up of a total of 6.106 production workshops and installation is carried out by 43.000 companies. The players are experiencing a historic turnover, with 802 new manufacturing companies and 10.870 new installation companies in 24 months, while the number of manufacturing companies is stagnating (+0,7%) and that of installation companies is decreasing (-3,4%).

On the employment side, the decline in the number of employees was more marked (-4,2% between 2021 and 2023) than that of the number of companies. More than 180.000 employees currently work in the Exterior Carpentry sector.

Renovation of individual housing

While for decades, the French household housing renovation market has been the main market in the sector, it recorded a drop of -16,4% in volume between 2021 and 2024. To weigh up this fall in the market, it should be remembered that the renovation of individual housing had experienced an exceptional level in 2021 with growth of +19.8% (vs 2019). In addition, the year 2023 saw a low level of real estate transactions for old housing with 885.000 deeds registered by the Notaries of France.

Renovation of collective housing

Still negative with nearly -7% between 2021 and 2024, this market should rebound by +2,5% in 2025 (vs 2024) to record a total of -4,6% between 2021 and 2025. This decline is limited thanks to the dynamism of social landlords.

Renovation outside housing

The non-housing renovation segment, driven by the Tertiary Decree and the ZAN, should be the only one to grow this year (+0,2% vs. 2023) and over the entire period 2021-2025 (+2,5%). As a reminder, the Tertiary Decree requires owners of tertiary buildings, whether private or public, to reduce their overall energy consumption by 40% by 2030, 50% by 2040 and 60% by 2050 (compared to the 2010 benchmark).

The stakeholders surveyed predict strong growth in 2025 of +3,0% (vs 2024).

Nine individual housing units (diffuse CMI + group promotion)

The economic context has a direct impact on this market segment, which is recording the strongest decline with -47,5% between 2021 and 2024. This decline should ease in 2025 to reach -2,9% (vs 2024).

This market segment also continues to be heavily impacted, with a decline of 27,1% between 2021 and 2025. The decline is expected to ease in 2025 with -9,5% (vs 2024) even if the market is experiencing persistent poor dynamics due to housing stocks that are slow to sell.
