Despite setbacks, offshore wind power production could triple between 2024 and 2030

According to the study commissioned by the Global Offshore Wind Alliance (GOWA), global offshore wind capacity could increase from 83 gigawatts in 2024, enough to power a maximum of 73 million homes, to 238 gigawatts in 2030.

The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimated in early October that the growth of renewable energies as a whole was slowing down and that it would be difficult to achieve the target of tripling their production capacity by 2030, set during COP28 in Dubai.

But for Amisha Patel, secretary general of GOWA, "despite the recent obstacles facing the sector, the fundamentals of offshore wind have not changed."

"The momentum continues to grow as countries advance this now proven technology, which is essential to the transition to clean energy," he stressed in a statement.

This growth is taking place despite the major difficulties faced by the sector in the United States since January and the return to the White House of Republican Donald Trump, a fervent defender of fossil fuels and a staunch opponent of wind power.

The US administration has halted some ongoing projects and offered few prospects for investors. According to Ember's report, the United States is expected to build enough capacity to produce 5,8 gigawatts between 2025 and 2029, compared to a target of 30 gigawatts set under the Biden administration in 2021.

Other countries such as Japan or South Korea are expected to reach only about a third of their targets by 2030, according to the report.

The report also highlights that 88 states with coastlines suitable for offshore wind turbines have not yet set specific targets.

Among these countries is Brazil, host of COP30 in November, which currently has no offshore wind turbines on its 7.000 kilometers of coastline.
