To encourage investment in offshore wind power, which has been struggling for several years, the Danish government announced a few days ago aid of up to €7,7 billion for a new call for tenders in the North Sea and Kattegat.
"Globally, the implementation of offshore wind power has experienced difficulties in recent years, which is why we have agreed that the state will provide a boost to projects if necessary," Climate and Energy Minister Lars Aagaard explained in a statement.
The amount of state aid has been capped at 55,2 billion crowns (7,77 billion euros), with Copenhagen estimating that the real needs will not be known until the end of the tender in 2027.
Denmark, which is banking on green electricity to accelerate its energy transition, initially planned to build a cluster of six wind farms in the North Sea. With a capacity of six gigawatts, it would have been the largest in the country.
As of December 2024, the call for tenders for the first three wind farms in the project had not received any proposals. The government's support is intended to promote the other three wind farms in the project.
With a combined capacity of 3 gigawatts, they would more than double Denmark's offshore wind power output, which currently stands at 2,7 gigawatts.
Denmark aims to increase its wind power capacity to 14 gigawatts by 2030.
