Chilean architect Smiljan Radic Clarke wins the Pritzker Architecture Prize

Sixty-year-old architect Smiljan Radic Clarke is being praised for his minimalist yet highly technical work. "His work often appears austere or elementary, but this impression conceals precise engineering and construction," the organization emphasized in a statement.

An influential architect, recognized in artistic and intellectual circles

Although he is not yet a highly publicized figure among the general public, Smiljan Radic Clarke has long enjoyed significant recognition in international cultural and architectural circles.

The New York Times already described him in 2014 as a "rock star among architects", highlighting the influence of his work on the contemporary landscape of architecture.

Reacting to the announcement of the Pritzker Prize, the Chilean architect told American radio station NPR: "It's a huge honor. And perhaps, very soon, a slight headache, because it will probably mean much more media exposure than I would like."

Iconic works that blend nature, light, and raw materials

Among his best-known achievements is the Serpentine Gallery Pavilion in London, a work that has become emblematic of his architectural approach. The structure takes the form of a translucent fiberglass shell suspended on monumental rough-hewn stones, creating a subtle dialogue between architecture, light, and the natural environment.

Another major project is House for the Poem of the Right Angle, located in Chile and created in collaboration with the sculptor Marcela Correa. This work is often considered his most personal project.

The house is distinguished by its black concrete structure, combining angular shapes and sinuous lines, inspired by a painting by Le Corbusier. The architecture is conceived as a space for contemplation, where zenithal light plays a central role.

A career marked by migrations and a late vocation

Born in Santiago, Chile, Smiljan Radic Clarke grew up in a family marked by the history of migrations. His paternal grandparents came from Croatia, while his maternal lineage originates from the United Kingdom.

The architect himself recounted that he came to architecture relatively late, an atypical path that contributed to forging a very personal vision of the discipline.
