The energy group Generadora Metropolitana inaugurated on Monday July 8 in the Atacama Desert (north) the largest solar power plant in the country, with an installed capacity of 480 megawatts (MW), capable of supplying nearly half a million homes. in electricity.
“The inauguration of the CEME1 photovoltaic project is another step towards ending the dependence of our electricity system on fossil fuels and towards the decarbonization of our energy matrix,” welcomed Chilean Minister of Energy Diego Pardow in a press release published by the company on the occasion of the commissioning of the plant, initially planned for 2023.
This park of 882.720 photovoltaic panels covers an area of 435 hectares, or 370 football fields.
Generadora Metropolitana is a joint venture owned equally by the French group EDF and its Chilean partner AME.
EDF has been present in Chile since 2014, where it has already launched several projects linked to renewable energies in the Atacama region and the north of the capital Santiago.
The Bolero solar power plant (north), made up of 475.000 photovoltaic modules and launched at the end of 2016, represented the largest solar power plant in the country so far.
It was inaugurated at the end of 2016 by EDF and the Japanese Marubeni, and could supply electricity to more than 190.000 homes annually.
