Bouygues Travaux Publics announces €2 billion contract to build motorway in Australia

Bouygues Travaux Publics, a subsidiary of Bouygues Construction, announced on Tuesday 5 November a contract worth "more than two billion euros" for the construction of a section of motorway in South Australia, as part of a project called T2D, led by a consortium.

"The T2D project involves the construction of a 10,5 kilometre, two-lane, three-lane motorway, including tunnel sections, linking the Torrens area in the north to Darlington in the south of Adelaide," the group said in a statement.

The consortium is made up of Bouygues Construction Australia, John Holland, Jacobs, Arcadis and Ventia, and "Bouygues Travaux Publics' share is more than 2 billion euros," adds the French group.

The aim of this work is "to improve the safety and efficiency of motorists' journeys, and includes two three-lane twin-tube tunnels, which will be connected by an open-air motorway", specifies Bouygues Travaux Publics.

According to the group, the T2D (Torrens to Darlington) project "will play a vital role in optimising key freight transport routes" and will provide "better connectivity to Adelaide's CBD and major roads". "It will provide a revitalisation of urban areas through new pedestrian and cycling infrastructure and the creation of green spaces," it notes.

The main works will begin in 2025 and the drilling of the southern tunnels will begin in 2026. The opening to traffic is planned for 2031.

The French group has already participated in the work on the Melbourne metro, and in those of NorthConnex and WestConnex in Sydney, recalls Bertrand Burtschell, general manager of Bouygues Travaux Publics, quoted in the press release.
