Basel-Mulhouse Airport to be expanded for over 100 million euros

The current 15.000 m2 terminal will be renovated and flanked by a new building of equivalent size (14.000 m2) with the aim of "improving the quality of service," Euroairport said in a press release.

By adding exterior improvements intended to "reorganize access," the investment for this project represents a "total budget of around 130 million euros," management told AFP.

Construction will take place from 2027 to 2030/2031. The project design has been awarded to a team of architects led by the Alsatian firm DRLW and its Basel-based counterpart Vischer Architekten, the airport announced in a press release.

The proposal from these candidates "convinced by its elegant architecture, its good integration into the existing terminal (...) and the clear improvement in the quality of service" that it generates, explained the management of Euroairport in a written message to AFP.

"Optimizing passenger reception is a concern for us," Matthias Suhr, director of Euroairport, emphasized at the beginning of the year.

The Franco-Swiss platform was looking for a way to better respond to the sharp recovery in its traffic after the health crisis while protecting itself against a possible new downturn. It believes it will find this through this doubling of capacity, which it calls "Modular Terminal Evolution" (MTE), reflecting the fact that it is "divided into separable modules, allowing for progressive and flexible implementation," according to the press release.

With 8,9 million passengers carried, Euroairport recorded the second-best performance in its 2024-year history in 75, only 200.000 below its 2019 record on the eve of the Covid-19 outbreak, and up 10% compared to 2023.

It thus confirms its position as the third-largest airport in Switzerland after Zurich and Geneva, and the sixth-largest in France. Its management expects to reach a new record this year, reaching 9,2 million passengers.
