Lift Up by Balsan: a new low-carbon carpet tile designed for office spaces

The first product in the Momentum collection, Lift Up is a carpet tile designed by Balsan for offices and commercial spaces. It combines a regenerated ECONYL® polyamide pile with BioBack, a new bio-based backing developed by the manufacturer.

The slab has a carbon footprint of 2,74 kg CO₂e/m² across the stages from raw material extraction to factory production. This result therefore does not cover the entire product lifecycle, including transport, installation, use, and end-of-life.

A bio-based backing with a CO₂e/m² emission level of 0,3 kg CO₂e/m²

The BioBack reverse side combines a heavy mass containing, according to Balsan, 88% biogenic carbon from the valorization of by-products of the wood industry and an intermediate layer made of 100% recycled polyester.

Its design uses neither bitumen, nor polyolefins, nor polyvinyl chloride (PVC). Balsan announces a carbon footprint of 0,3 kg CO₂e/m² for this backing. This value applies only to BioBack and not to the Lift Up slab as a whole.

The Momentum collection is the subject of an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) in accordance with ISO 14025 and EN 15804+A2 standards. This document covers tufted carpet tiles made of recycled pile and a bio-sourced backing.

A velvet made from ECONYL® regenerated polyamide

Lift Up is available in a 50 × 50 cm format. Its structured loop pile velvet, weighing 580 g/m², is made from 100% solution-dyed regenerated ECONYL® polyamide, manufactured from post-industrial and post-consumer nylon waste.

The design is inspired by the lines of urban architecture and the presence of vegetation in the city. The collection includes 12 colors, including shades of beige, taupe, gray, green, and terracotta.

The random "Up to You" laying pattern allows for free orientation of the tiles. It enables varied compositions and can help to visually differentiate circulation areas, collaborative spaces, or meeting rooms.

Glue-free installation and removal

The tile can be installed without glue thanks to the B-Connect© system. This solution aims to facilitate the installation, removal and reconfiguration of office spaces, while preserving the dimensional stability of the flooring.

Lift Up has a total thickness of 5,8 mm and a sound absorption coefficient αw of 0,20. It is intended for high-traffic professional spaces and has a fire reaction classification of Bfl-s1.

At the end of their use, Balsan indicates that the slabs are fully recyclable and can be managed through its ReUse program. These features are particularly relevant for project managers and owners involved in commercial projects aiming for environmental certifications such as BREEAM, HQE, or LEED.
