Part of the Indian megacity of Bangalore (south) was flooded on Tuesday, May 20, the day after heavy rainfall that left at least one person dead and once again exposed its failing infrastructure, particularly in water management.
Authorities in the state of Karnataka, where India's tech capital is the main city, confirmed Monday evening that flooding had killed a woman.
The Times of India newspaper reported at least three deaths.
The state's chief executive, Siddaramaiah (who goes by only one name), blamed "the blockage of water drainage channels."
"These canals are small, narrow, and filled with silt," he described on his X account. "The municipality has been instructed to clean them multiple times, and the work is still ongoing."
Deadly floods and landslides caused by rain are common in South Asia during the monsoon season, but experts say climate change is increasing their frequency and severity.
