A petition to suspend rents in "kettle-house" apartments

"No shutters, no rent!", the petition demands, which has gathered 4.000 signatures on the Change.org platform.

"Faced with the surrenders of successive governments and the contempt of the media for the millions of us who will die of heat at home without any means of protecting ourselves, the time has come to raise our voices," the text warns.

He also calls for the integration of measures from a cross-party bill, presented in 2025 and entitled "Zero Kettle Housing", into the government's bill, which will be examined in the Senate from July 7.

This text, supported by the Ministry of Housing, plans to allow the rental of so-called "energy-inefficient" housing in exchange for the owner's commitment to carry out work within 3 to 5 years.

"This measure must absolutely be withdrawn, and the law must include concrete measures to allow us to live better during heat waves," demands the petition, which has been joined by the Foundation for Housing the Disadvantaged, the associations Tenants Together and Right to Housing.

The "Zero Kettle Home" bill, for its part, plans to include overheating of a home in the definition of energy poverty, to allow tenants to demand solar protection and air circulators from their landlords, and to simplify property regulations.

The authors of the petition invite signatories to register on a form to "participate in the rent strike, support the strikers or help with the deployment of the project".

Last week, daytime temperatures exceeded 40°C across much of the country. On Wednesday night, the hottest night ever recorded in France, the temperature did not fall below 26,4°C in Paris-Montsouris and 27,5°C in Bordeaux-Mérignac.
