84% of French people favor home automation to reduce their energy bills

An investigation that highlights the rise of smart heating, at the heart of new consumer expectations in terms of comfort and budget control.

Home automation is progressing rapidly among young people and accelerating among seniors.

While home automation is becoming increasingly common in all homes (12% of homes remain unequipped, compared to 14% in 2025 and 19% in 2022), usage reveals a clear divide: 33% of 18-35 year olds and 31% of over 65 year olds report owning more than 5 home automation devices in 2026, while only 28% of 35-64 year olds are in this case.

Home automation: the hunt for energy savings is becoming the priority for the French

By 2026, temperature control will be the most popular use case, with 71% of users expressing interest, a significant increase since 2022, confirming the growing importance of energy issues in the daily lives of French people. Following closely behind, energy consumption management (65%) and security (66%) continue to gain ground, while comfort-related features such as lighting are experiencing more moderate growth. The connected home is no longer a mere gadget, but a tangible tool for controlling expenses and achieving greater peace of mind.

This trend is confirmed by analyzing the reasons why the French choose smart home devices: 84% of French people now prioritize energy savings, compared to 59% in 2022, ahead of security (79%), which has seen a significant increase. While comfort remains an important factor (65%), it is now secondary to more practical concerns, while saving time is gaining ground more discreetly. This clear shift confirms that smart home technology is now primarily a tool for budget control.

The French are becoming increasingly demanding when it comes to home automation.

While interest in smart homes is projected to explode in 2026, price (82%) and hacking concerns (78%) remain the primary obstacles. Conversely, technical barriers are gradually receding, with a decrease in perceived complexity (62% in 2026 compared to 75% in 2022) and doubts about reliability (67% in 2022 compared to 59% today).

The market is maturing as the technologies become more reliable.

Controlled investments above all

30% of French consumers prefer a budget under €100, a figure that has been steadily increasing since 2022, while higher investments are declining sharply (8% between €500 and €1.000). The core market remains concentrated between €100 and €500, but is shrinking slightly in favor of more affordable solutions.

The future of the connected home is taking shape.

By 2026, support for smart homes is expected to increase significantly, with 72% of French people drawn to the idea of ​​a fully connected home, a figure that has been steadily rising since 2022 (63%). At the same time, the number of undecided individuals has fallen sharply to 3%, indicating that this opinion is now firmly established. The smart home is no longer just a concept, but a tangible reality and a concrete expectation for a large majority of French people.

Smart heating: a resounding endorsement from the French

Interest in smart electric heating reflects a broader trend: 81% of French people are in favor, with nearly half completely convinced. Hesitation remains marginal, with only 15% holding negative opinions and 4% undecided. This is a strong signal for the heating market, confirming the growing demand among French consumers for solutions that combine comfort, simplicity, and control over energy consumption.

Trust is being built for a lasting new generation of heating.

Nearly three out of four French people (74%) believe that new generation electric heating really saves energy, with 39% fully convinced.

While some skepticism remains (22%), it is still in the minority compared to an overall positive perception. This significant shift reflects a profound change in perspective on these solutions, which are now seen as effective and suited to current challenges.

* Methodology : Three waves of comparative surveys were conducted with representative samples of the French population aged 18 and over: 8.517 respondents in 2022, 8.412 in 2025 and 7.612 in 2026, spread across the entire national territory.

The data were collected online via the BuzzPress France proprietary panel (27.500 active panelists), using the quota method applied to the main socio-demographic criteria (gender, age, socio-professional category, region and size of agglomeration), in accordance with opinion polling standards.

The surveys were carried out respectively from June 2 to 7, 2022, from April 9 to 18, 2025 and from April 13 to 22, 2026. The results were subject to statistical adjustments to ensure national representativeness, based on reference data from INSEE and the most recent administrative sources.
