4 years in prison for those who set fire to construction company vehicles in Corsica

The Ajaccio Criminal Court, which ordered their remand in custody, also banned them from possessing weapons for a period of 5 years.

The events date back to the night of May 17-18, 2024, during which six fires were started in the towns of Propriano, Viggianello, and Sartène, in South Corsica.

All the vehicles targeted belonged to companies with construction-related activities, Ajaccio public prosecutor Nicolas Septe said in a statement Thursday, praising the work of the police.

"The stolen vehicle that had been used to transport the two arsonists had itself been burned and (...) following the spread of the fire, no fewer than 13 vehicles and construction machinery had been damaged, as well as a business premises, a garage and the facade of the municipal nursery in Propriano," added the prosecutor.

The two arsonists "indicated that they were recruited to carry out these arson attacks for payment," he added, assuring that "the judicial police will continue to investigate the criminal phenomena that harm healthy and fair competition between businesses and forms of pressure that are part of the usual practices of organized crime of the mafia type."
