2025 assessment for the wood pellet heating sector

In a context of tensions on the European market, France benefits from a more stable situation thanks to developing local production, which contributes to strengthening its energy sovereignty.

Pellet stoves continue to grow in popularity, while boilers remain a favorite among the French despite the gradual withdrawal of government subsidies. In this context, Propellet is continuing its dialogue with public authorities to ensure that wood pellets receive a level of support equivalent to that of other decarbonization solutions.

These figures confirm households' interest in heating energy that is economical, renewable and produced locally.

French pellet production is on the rise

To support this momentum, national production continues to increase. Several new plants have recently come online (Picardie Granulation, VPK, Lesbats, Destampes), representing approximately 300.000 tonnes of additional capacity.

This increase in production helps to secure the supply of the French market and to limit dependence on imports.

According to Éric Vial, general delegate of Propellet: "France has a model based on local production and the valorization of by-products from the forestry and timber sector. This organization makes it possible today to secure supply and stabilize prices."

Pellets: A Key to Energy Sovereignty

The situation observed in Europe this winter illustrates a key reality: countries with local production are less exposed to supply chain disruptions. Wood pellets have a major distinguishing feature: they are produced locally, using local resources, and rely on an industrial sector rooted in the local communities.

In a context of geopolitical tensions and volatile energy prices, the development of energy produced on the territory constitutes a concrete lever for energy sovereignty.

Prices are generally stable in France

In 2025, pellet prices remained generally stable in France:

• The price of a bag of pellets in the 4th quarter of 2025 is the same as in the previous year.
• The price of bulk pellets reached €370 per tonne (compared to €356 in 2024), representing a 4,1% increase year-on-year.

A consistently competitive energy

Wood pellets therefore remain a competitive energy source. The price per kWh of wood pellets remains significantly lower than that of electricity and fossil fuels, an advantage that continues to appeal to many households.
